In this 2017 comedy, Reese Witherspoon and Pico Alexander stars as Alice Kinney and Harry. Alice’s father was a famous filmmaker who recently passed. Alice moves in with her two daughters at the house and soon find themselves in an odd situation; what was supposed to be a one night stand ended up with no “one night stand” and a group of three filmmakers living in her home. Harry, the brains of the group, grows fond of Alice after their situational night that brought the group together. After months of helping out with the kids, the guys have to leave as Alice tries again with her separated husband. With some time apart, Alice realizes what the guys have done for her daughters and for herself and reestablishes their friendship.
I would recommend this movie with a 10/10 rating as it is about being able to allow change without making it too overwhelming. It shows the importance of not letting others control relationships as it is a two person dynamic. This movie is truly heartwarming and will make everyone watching feel every emotion possible!

In this 2010 comedy, Emma Stone, Amanda Byes, star as Olive Penderghast and Marianne; two high school students that cannot stand each other. Olive feels as if no one sees her while Marianne is the campus worship leader. To get out of a camping trip with her best friend, Olive lies and says she is going on a date with a college student. The following Monday, Olive tells the story of a good date that makes her best friend believe she lost her virginity. While Olive’s best friend is losing her mind in the bathroom, Marianne hears and begins to spread the rumor around the school. Olive lets the rumors go as it is giving her the attention she never had. Meanwhile, she has guys from her school paying her money to say they hooked up without actually doing anything together. Olive soon compares her life to Hester Prynne, the main character of the book she is reading for English class. After realizing the damage that has been caused to the people around her, Olive comes out and states the truth through a live web video. The thing is, the audience watches the movie through her webcam as if they are also a part of the high school class watching the live feed.
I would highly recommend this movie with a 10/10 rating as it shows what a reputation and one little miscommunication can do to someone. It shows the importance of being who you truly are and expressing yourself however you feel is best. It also demonstrates that if one is in a difficult situation, there is always a way to make the situation better. Maybe it’s by sitting next to someone at lunch that you notice sitting alone. Maybe it’s complimenting someone out of the blue. No matter what, every bad thing can be made a little less bad. In this 2021 film, Olivia Colman, Jessie Buckley, and Dakota Johnson star as Leda, young Leda, and Nina. Leda decides to take a vacation in Italy for the summer and ends up enticed by Nina and her daughter, Elena. As we see Nina interact with her daughter and unwanted early husband, we see major flashbacks in Leda’s early life. Leda talks of her two children but never mentions why they are not with her on this vacation. However, from the flashbacks, we see Leda’s early life through an outside perspective. We learn that Leda loved her two daughters, but hated that she was their mother because of the responsibility it held. We see the connection between Leda and Nina through Elena’s doll; one that Leda had similarly given to her daughter at a young age that was ruined, crushing Leda’s patience for being a mother. Throughout the film, we see more into Leda’s life, but become more concerned with her daily movements on the island in Italy.
I would recommend this movie with an 8/10 rating as it is a film about the mental struggles of being a parent. Many have been confused about the ending and meaning of this film. From my perspective, this is a film about guilt of the desire to live on one’s own terms, but the struggle to live for someone else. We see the doll is the connection between Leda and Nina as it allows Nina to feel compelled towards Leda and gives Leda the feeling of being a good mother without the responsibility of being one. This movie is open to interpretation by everyone, but I personally think this psychological drama is one that should be watched and is definitely worth discussing. In this 2012 film, Kevin James, Henry Winkler, and Bas Rutten star as Scott Voss, Marty, and Niko; a group of men who invest their time into boxing to raise money for the music program at the school Scott Voss and Marty work for. When the music program is threatened by the cut funds of the high school, Scott Voss decides to dust off his high school wrestling skills to help raise money in underground boxing for Marty to keep his job as the music director. With the help of a love interest, Marty’s enthusiasm, and the training from a former boxer (Niko), Voss goes far with this career and ends up in the MMA fighting ring. All he has to do is lose to win $10; enough to save the program. Voss and his team fly all the way to LA for the MMA fight just to find out the previous winning money has all been pocketed by the vice principal. This means Voss would have to win to earn enough for the music program to be saved. Find out in this comedy if THE Kevin James can be more than just a comedy character and save the beloved music program for his school.
I would recommend this movie with a 9/10 rating as it is a heartwarming film about fighting for what you believe in… literally. This is a great film to watch on family movie night as it shows the importance of friendship and sticking up for yourself and others. While this movie is a comedy, there are some real life lessons to be taken from this movie. So grab the Crunch bars and watch Kevin James crunch down on saving the program! In this 1999 film, Julia stiles, Larisa Oleynik, Heath Ledger, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt star as Kat Stratford, Bianca Stratford, Patrick Verona, and Cameron James; a group of high schoolers who are all caught up in a love knot. Cameron is crushing on miss poplar Bianca, but is not allowed to date until her hardcore sister Kat dates. In order to be able to go out with Bianca, Cameron pays Patrick to go out with Kat; unbeknownst to Kat. Throughout the movie, we see Bianca fall for mister popular Joey Donner (Andrew Keegan), while also spending more time with Cameron. We also see Patrick fall in love with Kat as he gets to know her as more than the argumentative feminist in English class.
I would recommend this movie with a 10/10 rating as it is a Gil Junger classic that speaks to not letting others decide your life for you. We learn through Kat to defend ourselves and always speak to what is right. We learn from Bianca that the mister popular isn’t always mister right. This movie discusses the unspoken bond between sisters and the lengths one will go to for love. In this 2022 film, Simon Pegg, Justina Machado, Vincent Tong, and Josh Peck star as Buck, Zee, Crash, and Eddie; a group of animals that are in the underworld fighting other dinosaurs to prevent them from taking over. Prior to this, Crash and Eddie are told they could not survive on their own because of their impulsive behavior. To prove their family wrong, Crash and Eddie go on their own and end up in the underworld and stay with Buck. Buck is a longtime friend who is just as adventurous as the two boys. After finding out a dinosaur wants to take over the underworld, the three attempt to fight against Orson as the underworld is supposed to be a free place. Through the adventure, Crash and Eddie realize they can survive with Buck as he is of the same species and allows them to be expressive.
I would recommend this movie with a 10/10 rating as it is a film about discovering who you really are. It depicts the importance of knowing your background and being comfortable with who you truly are. While sticking with what you know may be comfortable, you have to spread your wings and branch out to other areas to truly become one with yourself. In this 2021 Disney film, Stephanie Beatriz stars as Mirabel Madrigal; a girl who did not have powers that was born into a magical family. After finding out she does not have any power, Mirabel begins to feel like an outcast in her own family as they all use their powers to help the town become a better place for everyone. Mirabel becomes distant from her sister, Isabela, who is depicted as the perfect golden child who can sprout flowers wherever she wishes. Her other sister, Luisa, is the strongest woman in town and keeps the cattle in place as she can carry them back. After finding out there is something wrong within the family walls, Mirabel finds that Luisa is becoming weaker due to feeling like she carries the weight of the family. She also discovers Isabela is not in love with the man her family is having her marry; she’s doing it for the town. Mirabel attempts to fix the family by bringing back an old member, talking it out, and making amends.
I would rate this movie 9/10 as it is a cute coming of age story, but does not have the ending I wish it did. I personally wish it would have ended with her finding her true power, but instead she never gained one. Her “power” is to bring the family back together. While this is a cute concept, I think she deserves to have had power. In this 1998 film, Tom Hanks, Vin Diesel, and Matt Damon star as Captain Miller, Private Caparzo, and Private Ryan; a group of soldiers in the war. Captain Miller is given the assignment to bring Private Ryan home as all three of his brothers have died in war. Captain Miller brings a few men along with him in order to survive the trek to find Private Ryan. Symbolism was a huge theme throughout the movie; Private Reiben represents most of America that wanted revenge over the war. Bullets around Corporal Upham’s neck symbolizes death is in his hands while his character as a whole represents humanity (not wanting to kill anyone).
I would recommend this movie with a 10/10 rating as it is an intense movie, but puts across a message like no other. “You’ve got to earn it”. This “it” refers to the ticket home as well as a place in the world and the love/respect of your family. This is a movie I would recommend to a more mature audience as it can get dark and intense, but it is what makes the movie so captivating. In this 2021 psychological thriller, Freida Pinto and Logan Marshall-Green star as Meera and Henry Parsons; a couple who has recently moved into their newly built modern home. Meera and Henry decide to do date night with no electronics to celebrate the move. They return home to discover their house has been broken into and their electronics are gone. The couple installs an alarm system to soothe their nerves about the situation. However this does not do well as the cords are cut when the attackers return to rob the couple once again. Henry pulls a gun from their plants and takes care of the robbing family, startling Meera. This obviously puts a dent in her trust as she was unaware of the gun. After weeks of snooping, Meera discovers that not everything is what it seems and must get out of the situation before it is too late.
I would recommend this movie with an 8/10 rating as it was an intense movie with definite surprises. However it ended very abruptly and no concrete ending was given. I would have liked to have seen what happened after, but it was not something that made me hate the movie. In this 2021 film, McKenna Grace, Finn Wolfhard, Carrie Coon, Logan Kim, and Paul Rudd star as Phoebe, Trevor, Callie, Podcast, and Mr. Gooberson; a group that finds out the secret past of the town. After her father died with years of no communication, Calllie is left with his rundown home, where she moves her children, Phoebe and Trevor. Phoebe is a bit of a genius and does not make friends easily. After being put into summer school for fun, Phoebe discovers Mr. Guberson is a scientist and is trying to read the seismic waves of the earthquakes that occur at the same time each day. Phoebe makes friends with another student, Podcast, who inevitably makes podcasts. Most of these are of mystery such as old murder stories and ghost stories. Meanwhile, Trevor lands a job at the local town diner, where he makes friends with his coworkers. Trevor and his friends team up with Phoebe and her friends after learning their town is in danger.
I would recommend this movie with an 8/10 rating as it was a cute movie, but my heart will always go to the original Ghostbusters. I credit the Afterlife movie as they do bring back some emotions with characters, but I overall will always like the original better. |
