In this 1939 film, Judy Garland stars as Dorothy in Kansas with her dog Toto. Dorothy dreams of a place “over the rainbow” where life is better and colorful. When a twister hits Kansas, Dorothy and Toto are swept up in their house, landing in Munchkin Town, over the rainbow. Her house lands on the Wicked Witch of the East, killing her. The Munchkins celebrate, but is short-lived as the Wicked Witch of the West appears to retrieve her sister’s shoes. After the shoes appear on Dorothy, the Wicked Witch of the West immediately does not take kindly to Dorothy. Dorothy just wants to return to Kansas, but must go on a trip to see the Wizard of Oz. Throughout her journey, she makes three acquaintances who also wants to see the wizard. Upon returning home, Dorothy realizes it was a dream and she is in her loving home again. This film was based off of the book, written by L. Frank Baum. Baum wrote this book to talk of the injustment of the government. The Land of Oz is seen as a city of green, however the city is not actually green. It is rereleased that everyone is required to wear glasses that make the town look green. This represents the corruption that made the people see the city rich and perfect. There were many imperfections in the city that one can see throughout the film as it was comparable to all struggles in modern day cities.
I would recommend this movie with a 10/10 rating as it shows the imperfections of cities and government. It shows the importance of friendship to get through the journey of life. This movie is one for all ages to enjoy as there is something for everyone.

In this 2011 movie, AnnaSophia Robb stars as Bethany Hamilton, the teen surfer who survived a shark attack. This movie is based on the true story of Bethany Hamilton and her struggle to get back to a normal life with only one arm. Bethany was a competing surfer who had a bright future ahead of her with surfing. She was on a morning surf with family friends when she lost her arm to a shark. She struggles to get back to a normal life as paparazzi are following her every move. When Bethany feels like giving up, her church friend Sarah, played by Carrie Underwood, convinces her to go on a mission trip. This mission trip was to Thailand, where there had recently been a major title wave. When Bethany sees that the children are scared of the water, she attempts to help them get into the water and start surfing as well. While listening to their stories, Bethany realizes that she is extremely blessed to have survived her attack. Upon returning home, Bethany decides to pick surfing back up and get back to a semi-normal life.
I would highly recommend this movie with a 10/10 rating as it is a story of family support through a life altering experience. Bethany shows that one should never give up because there are people who care and are willing to push you to become a better version of yourself. There are many obstacles in life that are going to make one give up, but with the right support, you can get through anything. This is an emotional movie that I do not recommend watching alone if you cry easily! In this 2010 movie, Madeline Carroll and Callan McAuliffe star as Juli Baker and Bryce Loski, two neighbors in a vicious love cycle. Juli Baker moves in next to Bryce and instantly falls in love with him; unfortunately, Bryce does not feel the same. The story continues with Juli being infatuated by Bryce even after he constantly breaks her heart; saying no, going out with other girls, and at points completely ignoring Juli. Juli goes through an emotional childhood after being bullied about her crush and suffers from the pain of knowing she cannot have him. After years of everyone knowing how in love she is with him, Juli decides to move on from her seemingly unattainable love interest. Once Bryce sees Juli sitting with another boy and realizes that she has moved on, he realizes that he is in love with her. Unfortunately, Bryce is too late and their emotions are “flipped” to what seems forever.
I highly recommend this movie with a 9/10 rating as it is a heartfelt love story about two neighbors throughout their lives. This movie is an emotional roller coaster with laughs, cries, cheering, and yelling. I recommend watching this movie with family, friends, and/or significant others for a fun bonding time! In this 2017 film, Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron star as Mitch and Matt Brody along with several other lifeguards in Malibu. When a boat is caught on fire in the middle of the ocean, the lifeguard team decides to take matters into their own hands and solve the mysterious incident. While doing this, the team discovers a dirty laundering scheme within the security of the beach. In the midst of attempting to find the source of the laundering project, Mitch is attempting to train Matt in becoming a certified lifeguard in order to fully become apart of the team. This movie has something for everyone as it is filled with action, comedy, and love.
I would recommend this movie with a 8/10 rating as it is a comedic action movie that has something for everyone in it. The only reason this does not get a rating of ten is the fact that it is unrealistic, but still has a funny storyline that is easy to follow. The friendly rivalry between Mitch and Matt could be considered its own side plot, but the movie would not be the same without it. This movie is one to watch when in the mood for a good laugh with an ounce of action. In this 2021 Christmas movie, Nina Dobrev, Jimmy Yang, and Darren Barnet star as Natalie Bauer, Josh Lin, and Tag. Natalie’s job as a journalist is to write about her failed dates that she goes on constantly. After years of bad first dates that never turn into second ones, Natalie thinks she finds the one on a dating website. She falls in love over the phone, but he lives on the East Coast while she is in LA. For Christmas, she decides to fly out and surprise him for the holidays. Natalie is shocked when she finds that who she thought was Josh is actually Tag, another guy in town. In other words, Natalie was catfished and stuck on the East Coast for the holidays. Josh attempts to help Natalie talk to Tag in exchange for her acting like his girlfriend around his family. This messy love triangle, like many others, comes crumbling down when family members catch sticky situations at events and parties.
I would highly recommend this movie with a 10/10 rating as it is the typical rom com that everyone loves. This movie is warmhearted but can be emotional at times. The emotional rollercoaster is a must watch over the holidays this year! In this 2021 film, Simu Liu and Awkwafina star as Shang-Chi and Katy, best friends in the city. After years of working for valet parking, Shang-Chi is drawn back to his roots of fighting when his father sends people to kill him. Katy and Shang-Chi travel back to his homeland to find out what has happened. We find out his mother was killed as his father chose to ignore the situation. His father chose the Ten Rings that give him a lot of power over his family. We see the family grow together without their father and witness Katy grow in confidence. Shang-Chi trains with family friends to fight against his father by using natural forces while growing as a person at the same time.
I would recommend this film with a 10/10 rating as it shows family is strong, but friends that are family are even stronger. This is definitely a movie to watch with friends and family that you are close with to enjoy. Be prepared for a cry or two!! In this 1993 classic, Sarah Jessica Parker, Bette Midler, and Kathy Najimy star as the Sanderson sisters; Sarah, Winifred, and Mary. They are witches in Salem, Massachusetts that are sucking the lives out of children in order to stay young and beautiful. After getting the daughter of an important family, the three witches are caught and are executed outside their house. Before they die, they put a spell on the “Black Flamed Candle” so that on Halloween night, a virgin will light the candle and bring the witches back. Fast forward to modern day, a boy, Max, lights the candle to impress a girl, Allison, on Halloween night. After the witches come back, Allison, Max, and Max’s little sister Dani attempt to find a way to end the witches’ curse with the help of Thackery Binx, the cat who was the brother of the little girl the witches killed all those years ago. Throughout this night, we watch relationships develop; romantic and sibling.
Even as this is a Halloween movie, the movie was released in July of 1993 by director Kenny Ortega. Ortega is known for filming Newsies, High School Musical, and many other classics that have won him awards such as Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing. I would highly recommend this movie with a 10/10 rating as we connect with not only the protagonists, but we find ourselves investing in the Sanderson sisters’ plan and how they act it out. In this 2004 comedy, Marlon and Shawn Wayans star as Marcus and Kevin Copeland, two city cops who cannot seem to do the right thing. When they are given one more chance before being fired, they make the most of it by having to become women who are famously known by almost everyone. These two men experience life from a new perspective and learn what it means to be a woman. The friendship between the two grows, but not as much as their friendships with the other women in the story.
I recommend this movie with a 10/10 rating as it shows what true friendship is and how far determination can take one. The bonds that form on the screen are absolutely beautiful; ones we could all learn from. In this 1928 German expressionism film, we see the basis of the story of the Joker. We are told that comprachicos cut into the faces of the town’s citizens to make it as if they were permanently smiling. All comprachicos were banished from England under the penalty of death after some time of torture. One man in particular, Gwynplaine, came across the home of a philosopher and was taken in. Gwynplaine became famously known as the “man who laughs” and soon fell in love. However, with love comes the want of a nice to look at partner; something Gwynplaine felt he was no expert in. Throughout this story, we see that character is not judged the same as looks as it is not what society cares about.
I would rate this movie a 6/10 as it was a little difficult to follow at certain points, but was overall a good movie. I personally enjoyed it, but would have liked it better if it was not a silent film as I am a person who needs talking in a movie to connect the dots of the plot. |
